BERENICE DUPUIS & DAVID PHIPAK / brains in a vat
Our intent with this duet is to embody Hilary’s Putnam’s philosophical experiment ”Brains in a Vat” which exemplifies how much our thoughts rely on experience.
If we were only brains in vat, implemented ideas would be false, not corresponding to the outside world. Difficult to hold this thought experiment without remembering that all most abstract words are metaphors from a physical world (it leads to, he points out, the strength of the argument, rigid attitude): these are all movement representation like in dance. Our Premise is that thinking process can be viewed as a kind of dance.
To explore this wonder we imagined the two brain hemispheres. In this organic thought promenade they set apart, merge, synchronize, listen, wander and get carried away. Should we endure this real world or return to the Vat where everything is false yet possible?
